RAMP: A Model for Reliability Aware MicroProcessor Design
نویسندگان
چکیده
This report introduces RAMP, an architectural model for long-term processor reliability measurement. With aggresive transistor scaling and increasing processor power and temperature, reliability due to wear-out mechanisms is expected to become a significant issue in microprocessor design. Reliability awareness at the microarchitectural design stage will soon be a neccessity and RAMP provides a convenient abstraction to do so. RAMP models chip wide mean time to failure as a function of the failure rates of individual structures on chip due to different failure mechanisms, and can be used to evaluate the reliability implications of different applications, architectural features, and processor designs. RAMP is a self-standing module which can be attached to architectural simulators which generate power and temperature measurements, and has currently been ported to IBM’s Turandot processor simulator and the RSIM architectural simulator.

A Microprocessor-Based Hybrid Duplex Fault-Tolerant System
Reliability is one of the fundamental considerations in the design of industrial control equipment. The microprocessor-based Hybrid Duplex fault-tolerant System (HDS) proposed in this paper has high reliability to meet this demand although its hardware structure is simple. The hardware configuration of HDS and the fault tolerance of this system are described. The switching control strategies in...

With the continuous scaling of CMOS technologies, maintaining the microprocessor reliability becomes a major design challenge. In particular, accelerated transistor aging is a serious reliability concern, as it considerably reduces the operational system lifetime. To address this issue, in this work cross-layer solutions for aging modeling, simulation and mitigation are proposed, to be able to ...
متن کاملNon-Local Feedback Ramp Metering Controller Design
This paper treats the problem of controlling large freeway systems through ramp metering to enhance their efficiency. Following a rigorous discretization methodology, an extension of the CTM model to inhomogeneous freeways with on and off ramps is proposed. Based on passivity theory and the piecewise affine formulation of this model, an LMI formulation is developed to design non-local feedback ...

Aggressive technology scaling has historically been the driving force behind dramatic performance gains in the microprocessor industry. However, as CMOS feature sizes venture deep into the nanometer regime, reliability is emerging as a first-order design constraint. Well recognized wearout mechanisms including negative-bias temperature instability and time-dependent dielectric breakdown will pl...
متن کامل18 Heavy traffic on a controlled motorway
Unlimited access to a motorway network can, in overloaded conditions, cause a loss of capacity. Ramp metering (signals on slip roads to control access to the motorway) can help avoid this loss of capacity. The design of ramp metering strategies has several features in common with the design of access control mechanisms in communication networks. Inspired by models and rate control mechanisms de...
